MASH off to a great start

Gents,

Here is the first post of the year, and amazingly we are already well into the school year and celebrating early successes of MASH and SHCS.

1. MASH BASH-- was another huge suceess with about 100 folks attending in the Pavilion. Great food was prepared by grillmaster Tom Hughes; Wine by Thad Cox; and Beer by Marty Velas. This night was a great night for food, fun and fellowship. We look forward to our 4th annual event next year....

2. MASH Retreat -- 12 MASH leaders and Fr. David got together for an afternoon to help focus MASH for the year. Steve Wilson led the get together and look for more info coming on the outcome of this meeting and future MASH events...

3. SHCS Golf Tournament -- this was held yesterday under perfect skies and with a full field of players to support SHCS. Joni Punch as our new Development Director and Rick Davis from MASH provided great leadership. Thanks to both for all their hard work and for everyone who participated. Early returns are that alot of money was raised for the SHCS Endowment.

Hope everyone is enjoying the school year and please know that all are welcome to all or as many events as you can attend. Look for more information on MASH Hoops, Men's Night Out etc.....

Spring Schedule for Dads And Donuts

Dads And Donuts (DADs) is a two-part Friday morning program ... the first and most important part is with your kids. Here's how it works:

GOING THE LONG WAY
First, as your work-schedule allows, get up extra early and take your kids to school by going the long way ... do something different and create special times by going to Krispy Kreme (that's where "Dads And Donuts" got started), IHOP, Waffle House, or even better ... grab your jacket, some OJ, and muffins then head down to Cherokee Blvd. for a few quiet minutes by the river. Sure it'll be cold, but you'll be alone with the most special gifts God has entrusted to us, our children. BUT DON'T BE LATE FOR THE TARDY BELL!

DADS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Second, join us from 7:50 - 8:30 AM in the Shea Room (or at Mass, see schedule below) after drop-off and get to know the other Sacred Heart Cathedral School dads. These other dads are a great group of like-minded guys who are connecting with the dads of our kids' friends; we're building a stronger Sacred Heart community ... it also keeps us (as parents) involved in our kids world. In addition, we also hear topics from speakers. Here's a list of the upcoming DADs spring events/speakers:
  • Feb 5: All-school Mass w/ Fr. David, 8:05 AM
  • Feb 12: No school ... no DADs
  • Feb 19: Principal, Mrs. Prater, school update
  • Feb 26: Presentation - Review of Sacred Heart Projects in Haiti
  • Mar 5: All-school Mass, 8:05 AM
  • Mar 12: Pending - Mrs. Prater
  • Mar 19: Cyber Security for Parents, Agent O'Brien, FBI Knoxville
  • more to come...
Questions? Contact us anytime at: mash.school@gmail.com

Be involved, make a difference.

Dads And Donuts Recap, Jan 15th

We had a great meeting Friday morning (1/15) at Dads And Donuts.

Hope most of you got to spend some quality time with your kids prior to drop-off. We'll do it again each Friday.

We were pleased to once again welcome Matt McCleary, SHCS's school counselor, to Dads And Donuts. Role models were the topic: have you asked your kids who their role models are? How about their friends at school; who are their role models? Mr. McCleary shared some fascinating survey findings from our middle schoolers regarding who their role models are and ranking those people they admire most. The data revealed favorable trends among our students ... ask Mr. McCleary for more details.

Haiti was the other main topic of discussion. In an impromptu way, Deacon Ben Johnston discussed his frequent travels to Haiti since 2000 with Sacred Heart's Give Haiti Hope organization (www.GiveHaitiHope.org). His first-hand analysis brought us up to speed on this charitable organization which is actively engaged in humanitarian/medical support thanks to a well established network of in-country and reach-back resources.

We also previewed last weekend's gospel reading concerning the revealing of Jesus' first miracle at the wedding in Canna. A discussion followed regarding the signs that God uses to reveal Himself in our lives.

Is the earthquake a sign to the rest of us that something fundamentally needs to change in Haiti to give the people there a chance? What should we do to help? Deacon Ben pointed out that three major hurricanes have ravaged the country and relief workers swooped in, cleaned up and everything went back to business as usual which includes abject poverty, exploitation, politics, and corruption.

Most importantly, create some special time with your kids before school drop-off each Friday morning, then join us in the Shea Room as your schedules allow for some meaningful discussion and support of our SHCS community. Call 591-4108 if you need help finding the Shea Room or have any questions.
