MASH Presents: Abortion: Truth, Myth and Morality

Dr. Rod Briggs, a high risk OB/GYN specialist, will lead us in discussion on this very important and timely topic which he faces on a frequent basis.
Dr. Briggs will help us understand the issues and “tell” like it is, show embryological development, and discuss the political, moral, and ethical situations that he faces not only with abortion, but with bio-ethics in general as it pertains to his specialty.

Abortion is a subject that I cover in the medical ethics classes that I teach at UT here in Knoxville. I have a concern for the topic not only as a university professor, however, but especially because I am a married father who is a deacon in the Catholic Church. Without equivocation, I oppose abortion for the ordinary moral reasons as stated by the church. I also oppose abortion because it is an egregiously violent act against another that fails to respect the vulnerability of human life at its earliest stages. Such violence undermines and diminishes the moral and spiritual structures of our very lives. For this reason, abortion is a complex issue with roots that extend well beyond the act itself. It involves many elements—social, emotional, psychological, financial, relational, spiritual, religious, and physical. In that sense, abortion is not just a woman’s issue. Abortion is also an issue for men, for children, for society, and for the church itself. Until we develop the moral courage to acknowledge and address the roots of abortion from a comprehensive perspective, we will remain behind the curve in eliminating its moral acceptance in our society.
